Our historic period

Unlike many other medieval festivals, we have chosen to recreate the late 12th century, when Federick I, nicknamed “Barbarossa”, repeatedly descended into Italy to subdue the rebellious Italian city-states

During these invasions, the impregnable fortifications in and around Bellinzona played a crucial role in the strategy of conquest. They served as the ideal base for imperial troops, as Bellinzona is very close to the Padanian Plain, what was then a prime theatre of military operations.

Of course, it’s not just the military chores, but also the everyday life and lesser known customs that are the center of our interest. In fact, Bellinzona was not only a military stronghold, but also a capital – “una civitas” – of a small county of medieval origin. The archaeological record demonstrates that in those days Castel Grande contained fortifications from the late Roman era, a small settlement, and at least one church and cemetery.
